Is your pile exposed to rain and snow? There's a reason that
nitre beds were under a shed roof, and stable floor and basement
floor dirt was used rather than the barnyard soil outside- 
You don't want the water soluble nitrogen to be leached out BEFORE 
you get around to extracting it.
